It's taken some time and some research, but I have come up with a way to support GameCube/Wii games on the OpenExtreme. ;D
Unfortunately, it won't be drop and play.
I go into the reasons for this in more detail in the blog, but I'll give you the basic rundown here. GameCube and Wii games do not use a standard ISO structure and are therefore unreadable by Windows systems (Mac and Linux are also affected I think). Since Windows can't even see the disc, it doesn't register the insertion of the disc and therefore doesn't trigger the First Run Script.
I've tried everything I could think of to get around this issue, seeing as the Dolphin emulator can read the discs just fine (as long as they are burns). Unfortunately, it appears that without one of a very optical drive makes and models on the market, it can't be done. But Dolphin can read it, so how do we get Dolphin's attention and tell it there's a disc in the drive? Simple. We tell it that it's there.
The launcher script for Dolphin is written. It lives on the Desktop. When you insert a Wii/GameCube game, you double click the launcher icon and all is well. It's the best I've got for now. As always, if you have a better idea, share it.
That said, here's how to enable support for GameCube/Wii games. Remember, unless you load an .iso file, using physical discs works only if the disc is a DVD+/-R burned backup.
Download Dolphin from www.dolphin-emulator.com Familiarize yourself with the site. Read the tutorials on how to set up the emulator. You will almost certainly need to update your DirectX runtimes. Put Dolphin in a folder somewhere on your drive. The default for the launcher script is C:\OpenExtreme\Dolphin as in C:\OpenExtreme\Dolphin\Dolphin.exe
Then, if you put the Dolphin files somewhere else, edit the launcher script to reflect where Dolphin lives on your system. It's pretty short and well-commented, so it shouldn't take long.
Then, configure Dolphin. Link up your real Wii controller by Bluetooth. Configure your Xbox 360 (or whatever) gamepad for use with the Dolphin emulator as a GameCube controller. Get your video and audio options right. Read the forum at the Dolphin web site if you're running into troubles. Then, drop in a burned copy of a game, double click the launcher, and off you go. Use the Escape (Esc) key to exit the game and emulator. Also, edit the launcher script to point to your optical drive.
It's your system, so feel free to call Dolphin manually, have it manage all your GameCube/Wii .iso files, etc. This is simply one way of doing it, the way I came up with. If you come up with something better, share. I'll leave this thread unlocked for that very reason.
