So, I've realized there's a few other things one could do with an OpenExtreme box. Hulu, Youtube, and Netflix come to mind. Additionally, it could serve as a PlayOn server for that other game system you have.
Why would I do this instead of just watching Hulu and Youtube on my OpenExtreme box? Why the Xbox 360? Well, because I haven't found a lot of plug-ins for WMC or just stand alone clients that integrate well with the idea of a computer as game system first, media player second. I guess you could use XBMC as your main program (or WMC) with some plug-ins for online media and have the box just play the game on top of this (or mod the script to minimize XBMC or WMC first before installing/launching a game). But like I said, I haven't see terribly many good ones.
Additionally, for my set up, my OE is a laptop. It serves other purposes too. When I play it, it's on the built-in screen or the small TV in the bedroom, not the big one in the living room. So, having it serve up Hulu and YouTube by way of PlayOn to my Xbox 360 makes sense. As long as you're not gaming on it at the moment, PlayOn or some other type of server (file server for example, or perhaps a media server for the Xbox 360 by way of TVersity) could make sense.
Sure, media playback, file serving, and transcoding and streaming take valuable processor cycles away from gaming, but, what are the odds you'll be playing a game at 60 fps on your OpenExtreme while also watching a panda scare itself sneezing on YouTube on a different screen by way of a a different device?
Just something to think about.
